Since efforts to segregate and recycle waste streams have been made, overall waste volumes going to landfill has drastically reduced. Whereas, previously, loads of general wastes were removed from the factory several times a day, now the new compactor needs emptying approximately once a week. This has created savings in costs of waste disposal When waste items cannot be reused or recycled, they are disposed of in the best manner for the environment. For example, old light tubes are crushed in the correct drum crusher and then disposed of by a permitted Waste Contractor. In addition to the focus on wastes, Bibette has looked at the management of their energy sources. The boiler is regularly serviced and adjusted by outside consultants to ensure that it is well maintained and able to run at maximum efficiency. There is also an ongoing review of electricity usage to look at potential savings in energy. Educational posters for staff are all over the factory. These cover a range of useful information for employees including environmental information such as the Western Cape campaign for water saving. This involvement of staff will greatly improve the buy-in to the environmental management process. Environmental improvements within a factory can produce multiple benefits. The bending strength and absorption properties of the textile reinforced composite are investigated and compared with fibre board and medium density fibre board which are alternative materials for the same end-uses. The polyester wastes such as, yarns, woven, and knitted fabrics cut at random dimensions are used as reinforcement material. Matrix material is prepared by mixing urea formaldehyde resin, ammonium sulphate, and flour in a weight ratio of 100:5:10 consecutively. The bending strength of the textile reinforced composite is less than the fibre board and the medium density fibre board, but it absorbs less water. It seems that the properties of the textile reinforced composite can be improved by considering the test results obtained.

There’s a lot of attention being given to eco-friendly homes, ‘alternative’ homes and other dwellings that are not your average single-family home. You can find lots of information on the Internet, in books and magazines. However, one thing you might have a fair amount of trouble finding is an institution that will finance your alternative home venture, especially in today’s depressed economy. There have been a number of individuals who, when seeking financing, found that anything that wasn’t a standard ’stick-built’ house was automatically in no-man’s land when it came to the ‘free mortgage market’.

Despite the fact that ‘green’ homes are held up as the houses of the future, there still remain a sizeable amount of banks, credit unions and other lenders that won’t take risks on them.

Another stumbling block for alternative housing is that institutions want to see comparable home values. It’s kind of hard to produce comparables when you’re embarking upon an alternative housing project. However, this is another reason that lenders shy away from this kind of endeavor.

The three ‘musts’:

First of all, your credit has to be very good for a financial institution to even glance your way. Getting your credit up after a setback is not within the scope of this article, but there are plenty of ideas out there for you to explore. The better your credit is, the more likely your chances of a bank taking a second look at your proposal.

Second, have very clear plans about your building. It isn’t enough to say, “Oh this goes over here and we’re gonna put that over there.” You need blueprints, sources for your materials, qualified contractors (if you’re installing electrical and plumbing), and, if you’re not, explain what you’re going to do to heat and light the house. You also need to be extremely aware of municipal bylaws for dwellings as well as any standards you need to meet. Gather all the data you can on your house, comparable structures and the construction process.

Third, be aware of what insurance you need and how you’re going to obtain said insurance. Some companies do not cover homes that are not provided with conventional sources of heat and light or are made out of materials not covered by their standard policies.

There are lenders out there that finance alternative housing, but in the case that you can’t find one in your area or if all you can find is a lender who charges you an exorbitant amount of interest for a loan on an alternative dwelling, here are some ideas:

Try a local institution. Local credit unions and other lenders may be more flexible than the larger national and international banks. If they have strong roots in the community and take a personal interest in what’s happening around your town, they might be interested in financing an exciting new project that elicits strong interest from the public.

Search out other alternative home owners to get an idea of what their experience at valuation was like. If you can get valuations of any alternative housing, even if it’s not in your area, it’s at least something you can use to go on. Also, other alternative home owners may have contacts or ideas that you can use to find lenders.

Publicize your search for financing. Green is ‘in’ and many news outlets could find this a good story to cover. Lenders might feel better about investing in a ‘human interest story’ instead of (to them) some random person wanting to live in a hole in the ground.

Consider private lending. There are online resources, such as Prosper.com where you can post your story, provide potential investors your story and hope that enough decide to invest in your endeavor. Private lending is generally more expensive than a mortgage, but less expensive than most credit cards.

The fight to get alternative housing legitimized by the real estate and mortgage industry is an uphill battle. However, the more alternative dwellings built, the more voices will be raised for equality among home owners – whether that home is a conventional one or something a little different, a little greener and ultimately a little better for the Earth.

At a time when organic food and sustainable farming have become the latest buzz words and people are starting to care whether the chickens they’re buying are free range and beef cuts are from grass-fed cows, the idea of patronizing ocean-friendly seafood is also starting to gain popularity. Contrary to common knowledge, caring for the ocean is more than just about saving whales and dolphins. There are in fact a number of fish species commonly available in your neighborhood grocery stores and seafood restaurants which suffer from overfishing, pollution, and other ecological concerns. The United Nations says that 75 percent of the world’s wild fish stocks are already depleted or are recovering from depletion.

Seafood generally has two sources: open water and fish farms. To say that one is better than the other would be oversimplifying the issue. A more accurate measure of eco-friendliness is to assess the methods of how a species is caught or raised. Using trawl nets, for instance, in open water fishing is criticized for its lack of selectivity and for causing damage to the seafloor. Trawl nets produce a lot of by-catch or species which are not meant to be caught. One estimate states that four to ten pounds of by-catch are swept up for every pound of shrimp caught in the trawling method.

Farmed salmon is also rated low on the eco-friendly scale. This species is raised in heavily populated large netted pens which leak wastes and chemicals to the ocean. Salmon could also escape from the pens and pose a threat to wild fish species since it is carnivorous. In this case, conservationists say it is much better to consume wild-caught salmon.

To make sure that you’re consuming eco-friendly seafood, it is best to keep yourself informed on how your favorite fish are caught or bred. There are a lot of environmental organizations that provide summarized facts and easily digestible information on this. Some provide convenient cheat sheets and cards while others feature downloadable data that can be stored on your PDAs and mobile phones. To make it easier for consumers, species of seafood are grouped into eco-good and eco-bad or rated on a scale of eco-friendliness.

It is also important for consumers to ask the right questions when buying seafood at the fishmonger or ordering at a seafood restaurant. You should ask if the fish were wild-caught or farm-raised, what region they came from, and what methods were used in catching or raising them. You can also specifically request for seafood which were produced in eco-friendly conditions. These actions will send a message to your seafood provider that you, and hopefully other consumers as well, care about the ecological aspect of the products you’re buying and it would at least get them to think about providing more eco-friendly choices.

Some seafood products already have eco-labels such as the dolphin-safe tuna which means that the fish were caught without harming dolphins in the process. Eco-labeling is still not universal though and with a loose standards on defining what is organic, an “organic” seal on your shrimp doesn’t automatically mean that they were caught through eco-friendly and sustainable means. As of now, the eco-label of the Marine Stewardship Council for wild-caught species has the largest reach and meets the UN standards for eco-labeling. There are various certifications for farm-raised fish but you still have to probe beyond the labels to find out if these supposedly organic seafood are indeed eco-friendly.

Admittedly, making a choice to consume eco-friendly seafood requires a lot of effort. But as people become more aware of such concepts as sustainability and ecological balance, we could hopefully muster the political will to introduce reforms in the seafood production industry.
